Agricultural policies
- Encouraged peasants to grow more on their private plots and increased payments for crops grown on the collective farms
- Plans for growing maize(Ukraine did not have a climate in which maize thrives in, it was far too damp) and increasing meat and dairy production failed miserably

Virgin Land Campaign
In 1953 Khrushchev’s attempt to dramatically boost the Soviet Union’s food production by opening up huge areas of land in and around Siberia and Northern Kazakhstan that was previously uncultivated.
Problems with the campaign:
- The new farmland turned out to be susceptible to droughts and only produce harvest in some years
- There were no infrastructure in the Virgin Land provinces before the announcement therefore there were no adequate grain storage facilities
- Major shortage in farming machinery
